Marking and unmarking the (non)native speaker through English language proficiency requirements for university admission

Abstract This article examines the language ideologies undergirding university English admission requirements. Universities are today caught between order of nation state and that corporate globalization as they seek to attract both national international students. tension produces conflicting processes (converse) racialization linguistic (un)marking within which universities construct proficiencies ethnonational identities. Our study finds two categorically different constructs proficiency (ELP): inherent ELP based on citizenship, heritage, prior education, tested ELP. These map onto dichotomous student groups. One side this binary—the white native-speaker citizen construct—is subject converse unmarking. While it becomes blurred, casts its Other into clear relief: Asian non-native speaker non-citizen. The research has implications for critical testing policies in higher education.
